Beat the Heat: My Summer TBR

The YA Indie Carnival assignment for this week is to give our summer book recommendations just in time for Labor Day weekend in the US. It’s been a busy summer. Despite the heat, I’ve been able to consume a few cool books. Yet, I still have a number of promising tomes on my TBR list.

I know what you’re thinking. No, I didn’t read it. You know the one that I’m talking about. The one with the colorless cover and the flurry of press. I’m just not a bandwagon kind of girl. Nothing I’ve heard about the Shades book appeals to me. I’ve spoken to friends that have read it and their impressions have been luke warm. So, you won’t find it on my list. Sorry.

What you will find are some books, old and new. Some have been on my TBR for a while and others are new arrivals. These are all books that I’m looking forward to reading in the next few months.

It’s been on my list for a while, but I just finished up Divergent by Veronica Roth and I’ve started Insurgent. It’s the story of a complex girl trying to find her place in a world that believes every person fits into one of five categories. It took me a while to get into the series, but now I’m totally in love with Four and can’t stop reading. The unforeseen side effect of reading Divergent…my 8-year-old son now thinks that he’s Dauntless.
Predestined by Abbi Glines is also on my list. It’s another #2 in a series. I thought its predecessor, Existence, was a fun read and I’m looking forward to the second installment. Pagan Moore dates Death. You would think that was complicated enough, but of course there’s more to the story. By the way, what Glines calls book 2.5 in the series, Leif, is also available and I believe that book 3, Ceaseless, is coming soon.
Another book that’s been on my TBR for a while is Stained by Ella James. Julia hunts down the half demon that burned down her home and killed her foster parents. This one’s received a few awards and looks very promising.
Anyone who knows me well knows that I’m a sucker for vampires. And vampires in Florida? That’s just something I can’t pass up. Before summer’s over, I’m definitely delving into the story of Jadyn in My Fairytale Life by Heather White.
And I would be doing you a dis-service if I didn’t mention Shadow Slayer (formerly 14 on Halloween), the sequel to 13 on Halloween, by Laura A.H. Elliott. This one is scheduled to come out in mid September. Elliott does a fantastic job of capturing quirky life in middle school. Can’t wait for 14! Please hurry, Miss Laura!!

For length’s sake, I’m going to have to cut the list there. So many books, so little time. If you have any others that you’d like to mention, please enter them in the comments below. Also, check out the fabulous books from these talented authors and recommendations from our awesome reviewers…
