Adventures of Gals and Gizmos

Once again, I contributed a story to the Brave New Girls anthology, which benefits college scholarships awarded by The Society of Women Engineers.

I was pleased to see the list of authors this time with a bunch of interesting titles. Including Mary Fan’s sci-fi retelling of one of my favorite fairy tales, The Twelve Dancing Princesses.

This year’s edition is called Brave New Girls: Adventures of Gals and Gizmos and it includes my new short story, Let the Numbers Show Truth.

I’m excited for you to meet Stella Purser, the “gal” of the story, and see the future Earth I’ve built for her adventure.

Stella is one smart cookie. Armed with a passion for figuring probabilities and an extraordinary attention to detail, she sets out on her first day as the youngest intern at the First Intergalactic Bank and Trust.

After a rocky first impression with the bank manager, she thinks her day can’t get worse.

She is wrong. Very wrong.

Upon the arrival of an alien dignitary, a bomb goes off in the heart of the bank. When Stella and the mischievously charming junior security officer, Fox, are among the few that are clear of the blast, it’s up to them to secure the bank and track down the bomber.

Did I forget to mention that the bank is underwater?

The paperback is available from some stores now. The ebook releases July 9. You can order/preorder now.

Ep. 4: On the Same Page

July 2019 episode of On the Same Page dropped a little early due to the Independence Day holiday. Watch it now below.

In this episode, Casey and I talk about…

  • The Devouring Gray by Christine Lynn Herman
  • Hunt for the Skinwalker by Colm Kelleher and George Knapp
  • Wolfhunter River by Rachel Caine
  • Geekerella and The Princess and the Fangirl by Ashley Poston
  • Keeper of the Lost Cities by Shannon Messenger
  • Your Favorite Band Cannot Save You by Scotto Moore
  • Even Tree Nymphs Get the Blues by Molly Harper
  • Rose Petal Graves by Olivia Wildenstein
  • Storm Cursed by Patricia Briggs
  • The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert
  • You Don’t Want a Unicorn! by Ame Dyckman and Liz Climo
  • High Noon by Casey Bond

Note that I mention the Once Upon a Book author signing event in Frankenmuth, Michigan. My bad–I give the wrong date. The signing will actually be July 20th (not the 19th).

I’m just starting to read my way through it and already I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE The Thirteenth Princess by Mary Fan, a futuristic retelling of The Twelve Dancing Princesses, one of my personal favorite fairy tales.

My story in the anthology, Let the Numbers Show Truth, is all about Stella Purser, the youngest intern at First Intergalactic Bank and Trust. It’s Stella’s first day at the bank, nestled below the waters of Lake Erie just beyond the ruins of Cleveland. The Amook, the universe’s chief supervisor of banks and an alien with the uncanny ability to draw out your deepest secrets, is visiting. Everyone is excited for his arrival.

As the Amook steps from his transport in the bank’s wet lobby, everyone cheers.

Then everyone screams as an explosion propels the bank into chaos.

Here are some handy buy links for the anthology.

EXTRA TIP: And if you like epic stories of strong girls, I’d also recommend Mary Fan’s newest release Stronger than a Bronze Dragon. Epic almost seems like an understatement. Gorgeous mythical storytelling with a contemporary feel.

Early Mothman sighting in Clendenin surfaces

This week, an article posted on wvexplorer.com reports another 1966 sighting of our favorite winged cryptid.

According to the article, he was spotted soaring from Koontz Cemetery near Clendenin, W.Va., on November 12, 1966, three days before Scarberry’s famous encounter with the beast.
